JAKARTA – On April 17, Worldcoin announced the World Chain, a new blockchain initiative designed to prioritize human users, increase efficiency, and promote real-world utilities in Web3 applications.
Worldcoin has recently surpassed the 10 million World IDs made and 75 million transactions completed. This signifies a fast project expansion. The network, in particular, has been designed to expand along with the wider Ethereum network as layer 2 to meet project needs.
Tiago Sada, head of operations at Worldcoin, said that although technically, the World Chain will act similarly to other L2 and Ethereum, the nuance is that this network prioritizes humans over bots, where blockchain often faces density due to bot activity.
“Usually, the way it works is every account struggles for the block space. Usually, because bots can move faster and they can beat humans,” he said, “Networks get bored with all transactions for bots, and humans get remnants often, they can’t even enter.”
The World Chain solution tries to overcome this by prioritizing transactions completed by verified World ID holders.
“This network will be an open network and permits like everyone else, but we will prioritize transactions for humans so that their transactions will definitely enter, and the rest of the block space like any other blockchain,” said Sada.
In addition, Sada explains how verified users will receive free gas allocations, minimizing friction for beginners. This protocol aims to achieve a balance where influential bots and users ultimately cover gas costs for casual users.
The network is in line with Ethereum and is also collaborating with projects such as Optimism and Base. Worldcoin expects full launches to take place in the summer, with a development preview expected soon.
The announcement comes after a series of changes the project has made, including tightening its privacy checks to improve user data protection and ensuring that its platform is only available to people over 18 years of age and enabling permanent removal of user iris codes.
On March 22, Worldcoin even made its orb software open-source and implemented a new privacy feature of “private storage”.
These measures follow checks from the world government on its privacy practices, which have led to some temporary bans on operations in countries such as Portugal, Kenya, and Spain.
Responding to the examination, Saba said that it was a natural process of introducing a new protocol that “luckily” was growing rapidly as happened in Worldcoin.
“When a project begins to develop, it’s the government’s job to ensure that everything the project says is true. And I think it’s really natural,” added Sada.
