The SocialFi era on Farcaster: six new promising dApps | by Francesco Di Nardo | May, 2024

Almost a year ago, during the first Onchain Summer, an app landed on the Base Network that kickstarted the SocialFi season on various blockchains. I’m referring to Friend.tech, an application that allows users to buy and sell shares of a user’s profile (keys) and access its exclusive chat. Taking inspiration from this dApp model, some platforms have emerged on Warpcast that, with their specificities, could compete, if not eclipse, FT.

Warpcast is one of the most successful decentralized social networking experiments in recent years. In a previous article, I thoroughly explained how the frame revolution, which allows interaction with the blockchain directly through a post, without leaving the application, is radically changing the way we conceive social media.

A cool frame on Warpcast

Although Friend.tech, the first experiment also born on Base, managed to innovate and introduce interesting updates launched in conjunction with the $FRIEND airdrop, there are fresher realities that, in my opinion, deserve more attention. The dApps I’m about to introduce are in different stages of development but, each in its own field, they all have the potential to attract new users and become central to the ecosystem.

Let’s start with a simple and intuitive dApp that allows you to buy and turn every cast published on Warpcast into NFTs. To access Jam, you’ll need a smartphone (not available for desktop) and a Warpcast account. Once inside, you’ll be able to post your content directly from the app on Warpcast and monetize when they are bought and sold. Recently, the function of buying Keys (a kind of share in the style of Friend.tech) for each profile has also been added: actions and casts purchased can be resold by buyers to monetize.

Users can choose the starting price of their casts. With each purchase, the price increases according to the formula Price = 0.4 * (index³) where the index stands for the number of minted pieces and 0.4 for the minimum starting price applicable (in $DEGEN). Each account is associated with an internal wallet that can be exported via a private key. You’ll need to deposit ETH to pay the fees associated with each operation (mint, sale, claim rewards), while to buy casts you’ll need to deposit some DEGEN. Start minting your favorite casts and keys of the top creators on Jam!

A new client for Farcaster that allows you to create exclusive content such as casts, chats, insights, and tokens for club members. With this dApp, every Warpcast user can create their own club to share exclusive content. To access a club, you need to buy a share of the profile you’re interested in. The share price increases as purchases grow. As with other dApps of this type, users can buy more shares of a Club for speculative purposes.

Actively participating in activities on ClubCast allows you to earn NFPoints. Every 20 points, the user will receive an NFT from the ClubCast collection to be launched in the future (limited edition with FCFS allocation). By creating a cast through ClubCast, you can also decide whether and after how much time non-members of your club can view the cast.

On ClubCast, you’ll also have a dedicated exportable wallet to deposit and withdraw ETH and DEGEN. You can buy shares for a Club in both currencies, while sales are made in ETH. ClubCast is still in Beta, to access you’ll need a code. Here are some: 34670d, 5d8314, acc4dc, c5e7b8, daab27. If you want to sign up, see you in my Club.

Uncuts is a collectible card game based on Warpcast profiles and developed by REKT on Base. The application is currently in the testing phase and can only be entered by invitation and played with the test currency, $CUTS. Each card has statistics based on the corresponding Warpcast profile’s performance, which are updated at each new epoch. By subscribing, you have the opportunity to mint your own card and introduce it into the game. The price of the cards is determined by the supply, the more cards of a profile are purchased and thus released, the higher the price.

Currently, the score is based on the actions taken by the player in the game, such as buying and selling cards, and on the value of the collection. Future gameplay dynamics, once the mainnet is launched, are still being defined (find discussions on this on the @uncutsapp and @onrekt profiles).

To access the game, you’ll need to log in with your Warpcast profile and an access code (EgJGe5Vx, OWnxoVqT, siFiGXkd, P1FejVbb, k6MKxdEd). As specified by the team through the REKT account, the cards and tokens accumulated during the testing phase will have no value once the game is in the mainnet. Only tPoints will be retained and transferred to the next phase of the game.

Every caster is a card. Far.cards is the first SocialFi experiment entirely developed on frames. Every Warpcast subscriber has the opportunity to mint for free and introduce their card into the game through the appropriate frame available on the /farcards channel.

The cards have five different rarities corresponding to the profile’s statistics: ranging from the most common, based, to the rarest, OG, passing through Active, Star, and Degen. Each card has a maximum supply of 1000 pieces, and the starting price, regardless of rarity, is 0.001 ETH, increasing as sales increase.

The revolutionary scope of this project is that its activities take place entirely within frames on Warpcast (despite having a reference site that allows users to have a complete overview of their collection and the cards in circulation). Card statistics are updated following the evolution of the corresponding profile. Rewards for collectors based on the volume of trades made are planned (the first snapshot was taken last week).

Gameplay dynamics for these cards have not yet been announced; each community can use them as they wish to create competitions with specific rules. In the future, an official on-frame game could also emerge. Collaborations with other projects are commonplace. Just to give an example, recently @perl, a betting game on Warpcast, launched a collection of 1001 NFTs called Perl Candy and signed far.cards, which in the future, according to the description, can be used to obtain special boosts on perl.xyz (currently purchasable on Opensea).

For lovers of video content, get ready to replace TikTok with Drakula, the on-chain social implemented on Farcaster. This dApp, available on the Apple store and coming soon for Android (you can still use it from desktop and mobile browser), allows thousands of creators to upload their video content and earn DEGEN and DRIP, the platform’s tokens.

In addition to the token trading system for creators (quite similar to shares), tradable in DEGEN and ETH, users have the option to send tips to creators in DRIP through the dedicated drop on each video.

You can earn DRIP by publishing content, inviting new users to join Drakula, and buying creator tokens. You can’t withdraw or trade DRIP at the moment, but it’s very likely that the token will be listed in the future.

You can transfer funds (ETH and DEGEN) to your Drakula account through the associated address found on your profile, or buy ETH directly with a credit/debit card within the app. Unlike other dApps presented, you can sign up for Drakula with your Google, TikTok, and Apple accounts, as well as, of course, through Warpcast.

The last project for this article, but certainly not the least important, is AlfaFrens, a SocialFi app created on Base and powered by the $DEGEN token. The platform allows users to create their own channel to post exclusive content and updates (alpha) exclusively for subscribers. The owner can set the monthly subscription cost of their channel (the base price is 500 $DEGEN). The amount is not deducted entirely at the time of subscription but gradually scaled down (a fraction of DEGEN per second).

By subscribing to at least one channel, you’ll start earning $ALFA, the platform’s token. $ALFA can be staked within channels (you can stake even in channels you’re not subscribed to). By staking your $ALFA, you’ll receive a cashback in $DEGEN, derived from the proceeds the creator receives for the subscription (currently, 70% of the $DEGEN generated by the subscription is redistributed to the channel’s stakers, while 30% remains with the creator). The more $ALFA a channel has staked, the more $ALFA are distributed to its subscribers.

The $ALFA token is not tradable on DEX currently, but it could become so in the future. The cost of subscription operations, $ALFA claim, and staking is quantified in DEGEN and can fluctuate considerably depending on the platform’s traffic. You can cancel a subscription to a channel at any time, thus stopping both the payment in DEGEN and the rewards in ALFA.

Thanks to the partnership with the Superfluid protocol, which allows real-time crypto transfers, AlfaFrens does not hold users’ proceeds in any way but directs them instantly to the destination wallets. After accumulating and staking enough $ALFA (the quantity varies depending on the cashback offered by each channel), the monthly cashback will exceed the subscription cost, and your balance in DEGENx (a fluid token transmitted live thanks to Superfluid) will start increasing.

With airdrop 0, 10M $ALFA were already distributed to the first registered users, and four other airdrops are planned for the top creators. The only downside, for now, is the inability to withdraw funds. There is currently no withdrawal button, which I hope will be added shortly. To deposit the DEGEN needed to subscribe to a channel, use the address provided by clicking Deposit on your profile. In this first phase, in addition to a Warpcast account, you’ll need a code to access (I’ll be posting new ones on my profile soon: @ifiwasfrank). If you’re already on AlfaFrens, come to my channel to accumulate or stake some $ALFA.

In conclusion, whether you prefer SocialFi with gamification like Farcards and Uncut, or you’re more inclined towards exclusive content like AlfaFrens and ClubCast, I’m sure that within the Warpcast universe, you’ll find the dApp that suits you.
