Kresus partners with Christie’s to introduce blockchain-based Certificates of Ownership for an iconic photography auction, revolutionizing how art collectors authenticate and manage their collections using cutting-edge blockchain technology.
Kresus, a leading provider of crypto wallets, has teamed up with Christie’s to offer blockchain-based Certificates of Ownership for over 130 lots in Christie’s auction, “An Eye Towards the Real: Photographs from the Collection of Ambassador Trevor Traina.” The auction is set to take place on October 2nd at Christie’s Rockefeller Center.
In this innovative collaboration, Kresus will issue one-of-a-kind digital certificates for each of the 132 auctioned lots, creating a secure and permanent record of ownership on the Base blockchain, developed by Coinbase. This partnership introduces a modern solution for collectors, allowing them to authenticate and manage their physical art through the Kresus wallet, leveraging blockchain’s transparency and security.
Trevor Traina, founder of Kresus said: “Blockchain enables many things. As an art collector, I am well aware of the burden of managing and maintaining provenance and proper documentation- often in paper form and in file cabinets. This partnership with Christie’s exemplifies how technology can enhance the experience for collectors, providing a secure, digital way to manage physical assets. We are excited to launch this initiative and set a new standard for art provenance in the digital age.”
With this collaboration, Kresus will enable collectors to access their digital certificates through its wallet, simplifying the authentication process. These blockchain-based certificates offer a more efficient and secure way to manage physical art collections, reducing the reliance on traditional paper-based methods.
Nicole Sales Giles, VP, Director, Digital Art Sale added: “At Christie’s, we are always looking for innovative ways to support and elevate the experience of our collectors. Working with Kresus to offer blockchain-based certificates of ownership is a natural evolution of our commitment to authenticity and transparency in the art world. This pilot program is an exciting step forward for the integration of art and technology.”
This initiative highlights Christie’s ongoing efforts to modernize the art world by incorporating blockchain technology, ensuring a higher level of transparency and security for collectors. Kresus’ role in minting these digital certificates for each lot brings a new layer of innovation to the auction process.
The photography auction includes works by iconic artists such as Diane Arbus, William Eggleston, Robert Frank, and Cindy Sherman. Ambassador Traina’s collection reflects major mid-century photography trends, focusing on the prominence of female photographers and the development of color photography. In May, Christie’s set a new record for Diane Arbus’s “Identical Twins, (Cathleen and Colleen), Roselle, New Jersey, 1966,” selling a lifetime print for $1.2 million.
While the auction showcases these valuable works, the integration of blockchain-based Certificates of Ownership is a standout feature, offering a new way for collectors to manage and authenticate their purchases.
