This morning, the Sacramento Kings announced a new partnership with tech company Blockparty to bring an NBA-first reward program using blockchain technology. According to a press release from the team, Blockparty plans to use blockchain technology to track Kings fans engagements and accumulate points in a virtual wallet within each fan’s Sacramento Kings + Golden 1 Center app. Kings fans using the “Call the Shot” gaming experience within the app can earn rewards based on these points.

“We have only just begun to see the benefits of blockchain technology as it transforms the way business is conducted worldwide, ensuring secure transactions across multiple sectors and customers,” said Sacramento Kings Governor Vivek Ranadivé in a press release from the team. “We are committed to continuing to deliver the best fan experience and are excited to bring this transformative technology to life to award our loyal fans through experiences in a secure and transparent way.”

Anyone following the intersection of blockchain technology and sports knows that the Kings have been at the forefront of adoption. They were the first team to accept bitcoin as a form of payment all the way back in 2014. They also were the first professional sports team to mine cryptocurrency in their own arena– a project that gives the proceeds to various foundations in the community. This latest venture is simply the next logical step in harnessing this new technology to help improve the in-arena fan experience.

This past February, the Kings partnered with MGM to launch, “Call the Shot”– a predictive gaming experience that is free to users and considered by most to be a precursor to gambling. Should gambling become legalized, the Kings will already have a framework in place and fans who are comfortable with the mechanics of in-arena gambling. If legalization is still far away, the Kings will still be able to accrue valuable information about their most loyal fans and how they interact with their product.

Other teams may be watching closely to see if this new in-arena experience helps to drive attendance as well as fan affinity. The modern sports landscape is constantly in flux, as many fans are debating whether or not to stay home and watch the game from the comfort of their couch. And while attendance in NBA arenas is stable, there is still a fair amount of revenue that could be generated with the new technology that’s being explored.

Reward programs by nature are about generating fan loyalty and “rewarding” those who are willing to spend money on the team and its products. This new version of that tried and true system will allow the team to have a more immediate understanding of just who are their most loyal fans. And, perhaps more importantly, who are the best candidates to become future loyal fans. Whether or not the rest of the league will adopt similar programs remains to be seen. However, the Kings are not shy about innovating and being a pioneer in the space and it could pay off for the organization.
