We’re proud to say we survived 2019, and we’re even more proud that the Games category on Kickstarter flourished once again. Kickstarter backers funded over 3,700 games projects from established gamesmiths like Steve Jackson and exciting fresh voices like Brandon Dixon.

We’re so grateful that we continue to be a home for games of all stripes. Let’s have a look back at 2019.

Our community continues to astound us by consistently putting fresh, creative projects out there and faithfully rallying around those projects. Have a look at these numbers:

  • 7,068 Games projects launched in 2019, up from 6,820 in 2018.
  • Over 1 million people (1,052,965) pledged to Games projects in 2019, up from 868,084 in 2018.
  • More than 3.6 million people have backed a Games project on Kickstarter, which is more than the combined populations of Chicago and Austin.

Here, our Games team shares some of their favorite projects of 2019:

ANYA COMBS: Chicory, by Greg Lobanov

Chicory is a fun, whimsical exploration adventure game about a dog wielding a paint brush. You make friends, you paint stuff, and you listen to awesome music. What more could you want from a friendly, artistic dog?

LUKE CRANE: Stonehenge and the Sun, by itten

This game is so weird. I’m so glad it funded, but how am I going to attach it to my ceiling?

A MAZE is a playful media festival and international platform, and I was absolutely delighted to see the community rally to support it. The video embodies the reckless enthusiasm that I love to see in games and in the world at large.

It was incredible to see the impact of games all over Kickstarter in 2019.

Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina Animated Special blew up the Film & Video category with its wildly successful campaign, raising over $11 million to team up with the Emmy-winning animation production studio Titmouse and the seasoned TV writer Jennifer Muro for an all-new D&D adventure.

Brandon Dixon successfully funded his debut Games project Welcome to Tikor, and then switched categories with Drift of Dreams, a graphic novel set in his Swordsfall universe.
